Okay, I think I’ve mentioned on here a couple of times that I’d like to lose weight and get myself to a fitter and healthier state. That’s all well and good until you realise the cost that incurs.
Shall we start with eating healthier? The cost of ingredients for a food plus the time and effort that goes into making a healthy meal is insane compared to picking up a microwave dish and I know speed appeals to me in the evening after a shift at work rather than an hours worth of cooking. The worst part is all those microwave meals that say low sugar or low calorie on them which are essentially lies… did you know companies break the sugars down into their smaller groups like dextrose and sucrose so that it doesn’t appear as the main in ingredient in the recipe? And the low calorie ones? Well compare to the same meal in full fat form and you will probably find the only difference is the size!
Thankfully The Mr is the chef in our house and is happy to create culinary delights for me, but this still doesn’t really lower costs. I’ve had people say bulk prepare to quick cook in the week but we’ve got the smallest freezer space ever so that’s not an option.
After the cost of eating healthy there’s the cost of fitness itself. I love going to the gym, the few times I’ve been for a jog around country lanes people have judged the chubby asthmatic but at the gym people have always accepted it, they appreciate what I’m doings hard at the start. The cost of attending however can be ridiculous, break the bank kind of money, especially here in Cornwall.
However even to enjoy a jog around the local area I need to fork out for expensive trainers that will support my feet, comfy running clothes and supportive tips – because as most women will tell you, running with books is no walk in the park.
Another way I’d love to get fit is swimming, a few people in my family do this and I think I’d enjoy that the most but as with everything else is costly with lanes swims fitting awkwardly with my work schedule!
I could almost bring myself to pay the price for a gym membership or pool membership and I appreciate the cost of running these places but on top of all that, I live in the middle of nowhere. So my costs are driven higher by the cost of driving to these places to begin with!
You’d think with obesity on the rise in this country and the fattest generation so far being brought up there would be a way to encourage exercise in everybody. In fact I’m certain that there’s a form of exercise out there for somebody, as I’m sure there is for me. I just have to find one that won’t break the bank!
What do you think about the cost of health? Do you pay for a gym membership? What money saving health hacks do you know?

This is something that has become very apparent to me since moving to uni & having to fend for myself – healthy food is ridiculously expensive. The majority of what I spend on food is just on fresh fruit etc. & it’s got to a point where I’m thinking I’m just gonna have to cut down on the fresh produce I buy because it’s too expensive!

It’s truly ridiculous isn’t it? The Mr and I love our fresh fruit but we rarely have it in as it’s just so expensive to buy!

I’d love to have something like an allotment although it’s finding the time to work on it!

The cost of vegetables and fresh meat often puts me off as I never seem to finish it and end up throwing it all out when it goes off! totally off putting!

This is such a great post! I’m aiming to be healthier this year but sometimes, cost wise, it’s easier to eat those ready made meals that I know I shouldn’t have. I always buy it all to throw more than half away a week later because I’m only cooking for myself as I have thee fussiest eaters for a child and other half…. so they won’t eat what I eat at all. My only saving grace is that my little one is a fruit addict so we get a fresh fruit box delivered each week that costs £8 & they take the healthy life vouchers we get which takes it to £4.90

Out of me and The Mr I’m the fussy eater but I’m willing to try everything 😄 I want us to buy a freezer so that we don’t waste as much because we’re terrible for throwing away food we don’t use!

Like you I’d like to loose weight and I hope to loose about a stone and half before summer. I agree the cost f healthy eating seems higher and takes more time. It’s really all about the preparation. Have you tried meal planning? I find it helps as don’t pop extras in to the trolly. Good luck with your weight loose

You can eat better on a budget, I find local greengrocers are cheaper than the supermarket and Lidl and Aldi are brilliantly inexpensive if you have one locally. I walk as my poor arthritic feet cannot run and with Cornwall as your stomping ground you have some amazing scenery to enjoy. Good Luck

Thanks for the advice about greengrocers and Aldi and Lidl there’s a Lidl in the next town and an Aldi being built at the moment so I’ll have to check them out! I do love walking along the cliffs, I’ll have to get out with the dog a little more along there rather than quick stomps around the farm! 😄

It’s time
I struggle with. That seems to make in ratifying in these things daft if I never get the opportunity to use them! I try little changes at a time, walk a bit more, eat a little healthier or make a few more meals healthy. That’s about all I can manage!

Walking is definitely on the cards for me, the biggest issue is I go to work before the sun’s up and get home in the dark. I’ve been doing more on my days off though 😄

I love this! I can’t have food and drinks with a high sugar content because it makes me shake for some reason haha. I didn’t know about dextrose and sucrose etc – I sometimes actually think I’m drinking something low in sugar but it still makes me shake. Maybe this is why

It’s mostly on things like ready meals, they split the sugars up so they don’t appear as the biggest ingredient! Diet drinks can also cause weight gain as your body starts storing what sugar it gets as they block the sugar receptors 😞

Agree with you. But anyway it is possible to be healthy and spend not a lot of money. When I can’t visit gym I do exercises at home and walk a lot! Besides of this I buy vegetables and another healthy food at marketplace (it is cheaper compared to supermarket). And good advice from comments to try meal planning.
